About the artist
Following a two-year stint of inpatient treatment for borderline personality disorder and heroin addiction, Sam North re-entered the world with the moniker “Sammy thrashLife” and the resolve to build a life on the new passion he discovered while institutionalized.
Bright colors, rotten smiles, and (often) snarky captions in bold block-letters characterize his work but a closer look reveals intensely honest, reflective, personal journals in small print. “I donʼt shoot heroin anymore but Iʼm still an emotional basketcase,” North says. “Paints and pens are the tools I use to balance myself out.”
For every piece of art that North creates, he writes a statement to accompany the piece. They generally include all of the text found within the piece, as well as stories, notes, and additional context, explaining what makes each work of art meaningful to him. They both tell the story of his life and reveal shockingly vulnerable (often embarrassingly personal) insight into his emotional state.
Following an extended relapse and hiatus, North returned to art and opted to drop the nickname. For now, you can find him on social media as Sammy thrashLife or at sammythrashLife.com.

Product details
“If you had them, I’d pay fifty dollars for a set of Sammy thrashLife greeting cards. Your art on the front and then just blank inside.”
And SO IT WAS!
A friend asked me to make these, so I did. And because she’s MY BUDDY, I made it a set of eight cards instead of (her requested) five. And so long as I was at it, I figured I’d make a few extra sets for the webstore. And since they just keep selling, I’ve just kept making more.
It’s always eight cards in each set but – when I restock – sometimes I switch up which cards are included.
Every set (so far) includes “I Look Cool Doing It,” “Mental Health Services Available to Strippers, Junkies, Cutters, and Other SICK GIRLS,” “A Plume of My Own Cigarette Smoke,” “Still Sick,” and “The World Can Be Cold and Mean But I’m Gonna Try to Do My Best Anyway.” Cards that have rotated in or out include “Stay Punk,” “(We are All) Shitty Children,” “Maybe It’s Okay to Be Happy,” “Adventures Per Minute,” “Bright Side Nihilism,” and “Snowflakes Anonymous.” You can see each card in this listing’s image gallery or read about each painting in the linked blog entries.
I reserve the right to switch up which cards are in the pack at any time AND the right to forget to update this product listing. If there’s a card you ABSOLUTELY need included, make a note of it when you submit your order.
Each card measures 4×6″ (8×6″ when open) and comes with an appropriately sized envelope. Both inside pages are blank. The back of each card features a Sammy thrashLife Greeting Card Co. logo (because I think I’m funny), an insignia, and other minor details.
